코로나19이 등장한 후 세계보건기구(WHO)에 보고된 독감 사례가 미미한 수준으로 떨어졌다. 코로나19 바이러스 확산을 방지하기 위해 취한 공중보건 조치가 독감을 예방했기 때문.

미 질병통제예방국(CDC)에 따르면, 2019-2020 시즌 미국내 독감 사망자는 2만 2천여명, 그 전해는 3만4천여명이었다. 2020-21 시즌 사망자는 600명에 불과했다.
