2019년 미국인 약물-알콜중독 사망자와 자살자의 수 15만6천명으로 사상 최고치를 기록한 것으로 나타났다.

이 수치는 2020년 코로나 팬데믹으로 더 늘어날 것으로 예상되고 있다. 주별로는 뉴멕시코와 웨스트버지니아가 인구 10만명당 각각 88명, 85.1명으로 최고율을 보였다. 한편, 뉴욕은 10만명당 33.5명으로 텍사스(32.7명)과 함께 최저치를 기록했다.
