K-ART: 근대미술(1897-1965) 특별전 & 박대성(1945- ) 개인전

로스앤젤레스카운티뮤지엄(Los Angelese County Museum of Art)이 2022년 한국 미술 특별전을 2차례 연다. 

7월 17일부터 12월 11일까지 동양화가 박대성 화백의 개인전 'Park Dae Sung: Virtuous and Contemporary Brush', 이어 9월 11일부터 내년 2월 19일까지는 한국미술의 근대성을 탐구하는 특별전 'The Space Between: The Modern in Korean Art'를 진행한다. 두 전시는 버지니아 문(Virginia Moon, 문선정) LACMA 한국미술 큐레이터가 기획했다.

소산 박대성(小山 朴大成) 화백은 1945년 경북 청도에서 태어난 해방둥이다. 세살 때 어머니가 사망하고, 이듬해엔 아버지가 빨치산에 의해 살해됐으며, 자신은 한쪽 팔을 잃었다. 독학으로 전통 수묵화를 독학했으며, 1979년 중앙미술대전에서 대상을 수상했다. 그리고, 가나화랑(현 가나아트센터)의 첫 천속작가가 됐다. 1990년대 초 뉴욕에 머물며 작업하기도 했다. 

박화백은 불국사, 석굴암, 금강산, 천제연폭포, 소나무 등을 즐겨 그린 박대성 화백은 "진경산수화의 명맥을 이으면서도 현대적으로 재해석했다"는 평가를 받는다. 박 화백은 지난해 3월 경주솔거미술관에서 열린 개인전 '서화(書畵), 조응(調應)하다'에서 어린이 관람객이 작품을 훼손했으나, 용서해줘 화제가 됐다. 

LACMA 전시는 이후 다트머스대학교의 후드뮤지엄(Hood Museum of Art, 뉴햄프셔주 하노버), 하버드대 정부및국제학센터(CGIS, Center for Government and International Studies, 매사추세츠주 캠브릿지), 뉴욕주립대 스토니브룩(SUNY, Stony Brook, 롱아일랜드), 그리고 메리워싱턴대학교(버지니아주 프레데릭스버그)로 순회될 예정이다.

The Space Between: The Modern in Korean Art

사이의 공간: 한국근대미술

9월 11일 개막될 '사이의 공간: 한국 근대미술(The Space Between: The Modern in Korean Art)'은 대한제국(1897-1910), 식민시대(1910-45), 한국전쟁기(1950-53), 그리고, 현대미술의 태두(1953-1965)까지 한국 미술을 연대순으로, 형식별로, 개념별로 소개하는 특별전이다.

전시는 '근대와의 조우' '근대적 반응' 신여성의 시각''모던의 모멘텀' 그리고 '현대로의 진화' 등 5개 섹션으로 나뉘어 배치되며, 안중식, 고희동, 배운성, 나혜석, 이쾌대, 이중섭, 김환기, 유영국 등 140여점이 선보일 예정이다. 

이 전시는 LACMA와 한국의 국립현대미술관(MMCA, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art)이 공동으로 기획했다. 

LACMA(Los Angeles County Museum of Art)

1961년 창설되었으며, 서부에선 최대 규모의 미술관이다. 소장품은 15만여점, 연 방문객은 160만명이다. LACMA는 1999년 10월 해외 최초로 한국실을 개관했다. 2009년 6개 전시실로 확장 개관하며 미국 내 메이저뮤지엄 최대의 한국실을 보유하고 있다. 2009년 한국 현대 미술가를 소개하는 '당신의 밝은 미래: 한국현대미술가 12인(Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists from Korea)'전을 열었다. LACMA는 현대자동차와 10년(2015-2024) 후원 협약을 맺었으며, 올 10월엔 LA의 아트 컬렉터 체스터 장(Chester Chang) 박사가 신라부터  이중섭, 박수근까지 한국미술 소장품 1천여점(약 5천만 달러 가지 추정)을 기증했다. https://www.lacma.org

Park Dae Sung: Virtuous and Contemporary Brush

Park Dae Sung was born in 1945 during the waning days of Korea's colonization by Japan. During the Korean War(1950-53), his parents were killed by Communist soldiers; since then, he found solace in painting. Self-taught, Park has spent time in China, walked the Silk Road, and searched for the meaning of hanja(Chinese characters), the aesthetic foundation of his calligraphy and paintings. 

Park Dae Sung: Virtuous Ink and Contemporary Brush spotlights the artist's large ink paintings, all revealing variations of the line found in his calligraphy. With a single brushstroke in the composition up close. The only small painting in the exhibition is of a valued Joseon bowl, painted by brush in a hyperrealistic style, giving us a sense of Park's wide range.

The Space Between: The Modern in Korean Art

A groundbreaking show that is the first of its kind in the West, The Space Between: The Modern in Korean Art covers the years 1897 to 1965, loosely organized chronologically, stylistically, and conceptually. The second major Korean art exhibitions of Hyundai Motor's Korean Art Scholarship initiative, The Space Between spans the arc of European-influenced art via Japan in the Korean Empire (1897-1910) and colonial period (1910-45), explores American influences absorbed through the Korean War (1950-53), and provides a glimpse into the beginning of the contemporary. 

Featuring approximately 140 works that reflect the flux of foreign-introduced new media, including oils, photography, and sculpture, the exhibition is organized into five categories: "The Modern Encounter", "The Modern Response", "The Pageantry of Sinyeoseong(New Woman)", "The Modern Momentum" and "Evolving into the Contemporary".
