“Nature is not just one thing….The nature of trees and grass is one thing. But there are many degrees of nature. Interstellar spaces are also nature. There is human nature. In the city, you have to have a new nature. Maybe you have to create that nature.” – Isamu Noguchi
Mark di Suvero established Socrates Sculpture Park in 1986, while Isamu Noguchi opened The Noguchi Museum one year prior, a block away in Long Island City, NY. Throughout their careers, di Suvero and Noguchi engaged in many projects expressing their interests in open-ended education and arts access for youth and the public. Within this spirit of collaboration and creativity, we are excited to partner with The Noguchi Museum on a series of free hands-on workshops for all ages.
Noguchi educators will offer a series of programs exploring a ‘new nature’ for New Yorkers at Socrates Sculpture Park. Participants will look at reproductions of Noguchi’s sculptures and writing, and use the environment of Socrates Sculpture Park to inspire conversation and creativity. Workshops include poetry and writing, Shibori dyeing, gardens and model making, and more.
Free! All ages and skill levels are welcome. Participants will be given a free pass to visit The Noguchi Museum after the workshop. Registration opens three weeks before each program. Explore the program and RSVP at the link below.
