2023 Vilcek Foundation Prizes

빌첵재단(Vilcek Foundation)이 2023년 수상자 9인을 발표했다. 이민자를 대상으로 수상하는 이 상의 2023 총 상금은 60만 달러. 

빌첵재단상은 2006년부터 과학과 예술 부문에 시상해왔으며, 아티스트 크리스토와 장-클로드, 영화감독 마이크 니콜스, 요리사 호세 안드레스, 댄서 미하일 바르시니코프, 첼리스트 요요마, 앤드류 볼튼 메트뮤지엄 패션 큐레이터, 그리고 한인으로는 허선(Sun Hur) 하버드대 생화학 및 분자약학과 교수(2015)와 독일의 패션디자이너 임상균(Siki Im)씨(2015), 메트로폴리탄뮤지엄의 미켈란젤로 드로잉전을 기획했던 칠레 출신 카르멘 C. 밤바크 큐레이터(2019), 이디오피아/스웨덴 출신 셰프 마커스 사무엘슨(2019) 등이 받았다. 2000년 체코슬로바키아 출신 얀과 마르시아 빌첵 부부가 창립한 빌첵재단(Vilcek Foundation)은 미국 내 이민자의 공헌을 장려하고, 예술과 과학 부문을 진흥하는 것을 미션으로 하고 있다.   https://www.vilcek.org   

 

 

Announcing the 2023 Vilcek Foundation Prizes

 

The Vilcek Foundation is proud to announce the recipients of the 2023 Vilcek Foundation Prizes. Awarded annually, the prizes recognize and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of immigrant professionals to the arts, culture, and society in the United States.

This year, the foundation is awarding nine prizes with a total award sum of $600,000. The 2023 prizes are awarded in two categories: biomedical science and music.

 

 

2023 Vilcek Foundation Prize Winners

 

-Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado (b. Venezuela) receives the Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Science for his contributions to the field of regeneration—from the identification of crucial genes that control regeneration in living organisms, to the potential for regenerative medicine to treat disease.

 

-Du Yun (b. China) receives the Vilcek Prize in Music for her open approach to composition, which subverts the boundaries of traditional classical music by incorporating influences from punk, electronic, and experimental music, and for the virtuosity of her Pulitzer Prize-winning opera, Angel’s Bone.

 

-Angélique Kidjo (b. Benin) receives the Vilcek Prize in Music in recognition of her exceptional range as a singer-songwriter, and for her creative leadership in bringing African Music to the global stage through her performances, albums, and collaborations.

 

-Edward Chouchani (b. Canada) receives the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science for his research into the molecular mechanisms that drive metabolic disease with the intent to develop therapeutic interventions for metabolic, inflammatory, and metastatic diseases.

 

-Biyu J. He (b. China) receives the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science for her leadership in the field of cognitive neuroscience, and for her groundbreaking discoveries on the biological bases of perceptual cognition and subjective experience.

 

-Shixin Liu (b. China) receives the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise for developing cutting-edge  tools to visualize, observe, and understand the physiological function of nanometer-scale biomolecular processes including DNA and RNA transcription and translation in individual cells.

 

-Arooj Aftab (b. Saudi Arabia, to Pakistani parents) receives the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Music for her evocative songs and compositions that incorporate a range of influences from semi-classical Pakistani music and Urdu poetry, to jazz harmonies and experimental music.

 

-Juan Pablo Contreras (b. Mexico) receives the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Music for his work as a composer and conductor of orchestral music that draws on his Mexican heritage, and for his leadership in founding the Orquesta Latino Mexicana. 

 

-Ruby Ibarra (b. Philippines) receives the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Music for her hip-hop and spoken word performances that center her experience as a Filipina American woman, and for her powerful lyrics that address colonialism, immigration, colorism, and misogyny.
