브로드웨이 극장 브룩스 앳킨슨 시어터(Brooks Atkinson Theater, 256 West 47th St.)가 11월 1일 이름을 흑인 여배우이자 가수이며 사회운동가였던 리나 혼(Lena Horne, 1917-2010)의 이름을 따서 개명됐다. 

리나 혼은 인종차별을 극복하고 할리우드 최초로 흑인 여주인공 역을 맡았다. 재즈 싱어이기도 했던 레나 혼은 '흑인 신데렐라(Negro Cinderella)'로 불리웠다. 브로드웨이 극장 중 유일하게 흑인 여성으로 이름을 올렸다.

리나 혼은 1917년 브루클린 베드포드-스타이브샌트에서 태어났다. 흑인, 인디언원주민, 유럽인 혼혈인 리나 혼의 아버지는 호텔과 레스토랑 사업가이자 도박사였으며, 엄마는 배우였다. 1933년 뉴욕 할렘 코튼클럽의 합창단원이 되었으며, 1942년 할리우드에서 MGM과 계약 뮤지컬에 출연했다. 1970년엔 가수 해리 벨라폰테와 ABC-TV의 스페셜쇼 '해리 & 레나', 1973년엔 토니 베넷과 '토니 & 리나'에 출연했다. 

1981년 극장 재벌 네덜란드 오가니제이션이 리나 혼 주연 뮤지컬 'Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music'을 무대에 올려 333회의 롱런 히트작이 된다. 리나 혼은 인권운동가로 1963년 3월 워싱턴 행진에 참가했으며, NAACP(전유색인종발전협회), 흑인여성위원회를 위해 일했다.

브룩스 앳킨슨 시어터는 1926년 맨스필드 시어터로 개관했다. 1960년 퓰리처상 수상(1947) 수상 뉴욕타임스 비평가 저스틴 브룩스 앳킨슨(Justin Brooks Atkinson, 1894-1984)의 이름을 따서 지어졌다. 1974년 극장 재벌 네덜란더 오가니제이션(Nederlander Organization)이 매입했다. 좌석은 1069석이며, 뮤지컬 '스프링 어웨이크닝(Spring Awakening)', '웨이트레스', '6(Six)'등을 공연했다. 

Cort Theater/ James Earl Jones

지난 9월 12일 브로드웨이 코트 시어터(Cort Theater)는 이름을 흑인배우 제임스 얼 존스(James Earl Jones)로 개명했다. 이처럼 브로드웨이가 흑인 배우들로 이름을 바꾸고 있는 것은 백인남성 위주 브로드웨이 극장 명을 평가절하되어 왔던 흑인남성 배우, 흑인여성 배우로 변경함으로써 이미지를 개선하기 위한 노력으로 평가된다.

브룩스 앳킨스 시어터는 네덜란더 오가니제이션, 코트 시어터는 슈버트 오가니제이션, 브로드웨이 극장 양대 재벌 소유다. 이로써 브로드웨이 41개 극장 중 흑인 희곡작가 어거스트 윌슨(August Wilson Theater)에 이어 흑인 이름을 단 극장이 3곳으로 늘어났다. 

여성 이름을 딴 극장은 에델 배리무어 시어터(Ethel Barrymore Theatre), 링컨센터의 비비안 보몽 시어터(Vivian Beaumont Theatre), 런트-폰테인 시어터(Lunt-Fontanne Theater), 헤이즈 시어터(Hayes Theater)에 이어 5번째다. 에델 배리무어는 배우 드류 배리무어의 고모할머니로 1895년 브로드웨이에 데뷔했다. 비비안 보몽 알렌은 메이시백화점의 상속인으로 배우 활동을 했으며, 링컨센터에 300만 달러를 기부해 1965년 극장을 개관한 인물이다. 린 폰테인은 1910년 브로드웨이에 데뷔한 후 남편 알프레드 런트와 콤비로 활동했다. 헬렌 헤이즈는 '미국 극장의 퍼스트 레이디(First lady of American Theatre)'로 불리웠던 배우로 EGOT(에미상, 그래미상, 오스카상, 토니상)을 모두 석권한 바 있다. 브로드웨이 최초의 아시안여성 극작가 이영진(Young Jean Lee)씨가 2018년 헤이즈 시어터에서 'Straight White men'으로 데뷔한 바 있다.
