뉴욕의 배우 겸 희곡작가 남유림(Youlim Nam)씨의 '새해(New Year's Day)' 무대 낭독회(stage reading)가 7월 31일 맨해튼 엘 바리오(El Barrio)의 아트스페이스 PS109의 블랙박스시어터(215 E 99th St.)에서 열린다. 주연 한나 박 역은 주니 장(Joonie Jang)이 맡으며, 남유림씨는 하나 역으로 출연한다. 이 연극은 코리안아메리칸 여고생 한나가 뉴욕대 경영대 진학과 K-팝 스타가 되기 위해 서울로 이사하는 것 사이에서 갈등하는 이야기를 담았다.

El Barrio's Artspace PS 109 is announcing a staged reading of New Year's Day (Sae Hae) written by Youlim Nam, featuring Joonie Jang, Brian Yeun, Inmi Song Thomas, Jun Kim, Wonhee Kim, Flynn Byun, Sophy Drouin, Jazz Cardenas, Kashya Hardy, Pamela Rivera and Youlim Nam as an Artist in Residency for the Summer of 2023 at El Barrio's Artspace PS109.

 

The reading will be held on Monday, July 31st at 7:30 pm, in the black box theater at El Barrio's Artspace PS109. A post-show discussion of the topics of the play will follow with a moderator.

 

Storyline: Hannah (Joonie Jang), a Korean-American high school girl, must decide between attending NYU Stern School of Business or moving across the world to Seoul to become a K-pop star. As she attempts to resolve these two conflicting paths, something deep inside her cracks open: she begins excavating her complex relationship with her family as a second generation Korean-American who has never been to Korea.

ABOUT YOULIM NAM (as "Hana"/Playwright/Producer)

Youlim Nam is a Brooklyn-based actor, and playwright hailing from Seoul, Korea. She's been in multiple off-off Broadway productions such as 12 Angry Women. Recently, her full-length play a connected place was directed by Cady McClain, a three-time Emmy winner actress in 2023 as a staged reading at the Dramatists Guild in NYC, in which she also played the lead role. Her numerous short plays: 28+2, A Watch, Just B'day Dinner in NYC, etc. have been produced on off-off-Broadway. You can also find her in award-winning indie films such as Mingle. Before her new chapter in NYC, she had acted in Korean productions in Korea’s theater sector, Dahak-ro in Seoul. Awards include 'Best Monologue' at Actors Awards, LA, the City Artist Corps Grant, and Ma Yi Theater Micro-Grant. She's a member of the Dramatists Guild and Axial Theatre. Training: HB Studio, and Stella Adler Studio of Acting. youlimnam.com 

 

ABOUT JOONIE JANG (as "Hannah Park")

Joonie Jang is a set designer and production designer based in NYC whose recent clients include Adidas, The Cut, Office Magazine, Document Journal and Beats by Dre. She grew up in Queens, where she was born, and on Long Island. She relishes the opportunity here to connect with her own Korean-American experience. This project will mark her acting debut.

 

ABOUT BRIAN YEUN (as "David")

Brian Yeun is a Korean-American actor hailing from Michigan. He has trained at the Aquila Studio in Los Angeles and from the Stella Adler Studio’s Evening Conservatory in New York graduating in June of 2023. A former restaurant owner for ten years in Los Angeles and business major, Brian is new to the arts.
