하와이 마우이섬의 라하이나(Lahaina) 타운이 8일 화재로 파괴됐다고 USA투데이가 보도했다. 인명 피해는 최소 93명이다. 한때 하와이 왕국의 수도였던 라하이나 타운 전체가 연기에 휩싸이면서 호텔, 빌딩, 유적지 등 270개 이상의 구조물이 손상/파괴됐다. 2020년 현재 라하이나의 인구는 약 1만3천명이다. 하와이 문화와 스토리텔링이 잘 보존되었던 라하이나 마을은 잿더미가 됐다. 이번 마우이섬 화재는 빅아일랜드처럼 강풍(허리케인 도라), 건조한 초목, 낮은 습도 등으로 피해가 격심한 것으로 알려졌다.
