작곡가 진은숙(Unsuk Chin, 63)씨가 아시안 최초로 2024 국제 에른스트 폰 지멘스 음악상(international Ernst von Siemens Music Prize) 수상자로 선정됐다. 독일 에른스트 폰 지멘스 재단과 바이에른 예술원이 공동으로 주관하는 지멘스상은 '클래식 음악계의 노벨상(the Nobel Prize of music)'으로 비유되는 권위있는 상이다. 클래식 음악 작곡가, 공연자, 음악학자를 통틀어 해마다 1명을 선정해 시상한다. 

 

재단 측은 "에른스트 폰 지멘스 음악재단은 세계적으로 유명한 작곡가 진은숙씨에게 이 상을 수여함으로써 그녀의 작품이 전 세계에서 연주되고 있다는 사실을 인정한다. 그는 오페라 '이상한 나라의 앨리스'와 같은 큰 성공을 거두며 새로운 음악에 대한 새로운 길을 열고, 광범위한 청중에게 영감을 주었다"고 선정 이유를 밝혔다. 상금은 25만 유로(27만 달러), 시상식은 5월 18일 뮌헨의 헤르큘레스 홀(Herkules Hall)에서 열리며 피에르 블루즈(Pierre Bleuse)의 지휘로 그의 곡이 연주될 예정이다. 

 

통영국제음악제 예술감독을 맡고 있는 진은숙씨는 '클래식 작곡가들의 노벨상' 그라베마이어상(Grawemeyer Award, 2004), 비후리 시벨리우스 음악상(Wihrui Sibelius Prize,2017), 마리 호세 크라비스 신곡상(Marie-Josée Kravis Prize for New Music, 2018) 등 권위있는 음악상을 받아 이번 수상으로 ‘음악상의 그랜드슬램’을 달성한 것으로 평가된다.

 

국제 에른스트 폰 지멘스 음악상은 1974년 유럽 최대의 기술기업 지멘스 창업자의 손자이자 에른스트 폰 지멘스(1903-1990)의 이름을 따서 창설되었다. 역대 수상자로는 영국 작곡가 벤자민 브리튼(Benjamin Britten, 1974), 프랑스 작곡가 올리비에 메시앙(Olivier Messiaen, 1975), 러시아 첼리스트 므스티슬라브 로스트로비치(Mstislav Rostropovich, 1976), 독일 지휘자 카라얀(Herbert von Karajan, 1977), 바이올리니스트 기돈 크레머(Gidon Kremer, 1982), 영국 바이올리니스트 예후디 메누힌(Yehudi Menuhin, 1984), 미국 지휘자/작곡가 레오나드 번스타인(Leonard Bernstein, 1987), 루마니아 출신 작곡가 죄르지 리게티(György Ligeti, 1993), 독일 지휘자 클라우디오 아바도(Claudio Abbado, 1994), 이탈리아 피아니스트 마우리지오 폴리니(Maurizio Pollini, 1996), 오스트리아 피아니스트 알프레드 브란델(Alfred Brendel, 2004), 지휘자/피아니스트 다니엘 바렌보임(Daniel Barenboim, 2006), 바이올리니스트 안네 소피 뮤터(Anne-Sophie Mutter, 2008) 등이 있다.

The international Ernst von Siemens Music Prize 2024 will be awarded to the South Korean composer Unsuk Chin. With Unsuk Chin, the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is honouring an internationally renowned composer whose works are performed worldwide. With her great successes such as the opera Alice in Wonderland, she has opened up new paths for new music and inspired a wide audience.
