The greatest wine collections are exhilarating, in their quality, their selectivity and their depth of vintage and producer. This one is especially gorgeous, dominated by Burgundy's giants, Grands Crus from the region's starriest winemakers and most magical plots. The description could also fit the sheer number of magnums, as the format is much rarer in Burgundy than in Bordeaux, linked to the obvious difference in the quantity produced in these two noble regions.

 

As a lifelong devotee of the wines of Domaine Armand Rousseau, I can only marvel at the range and choice in this auction, covering the periods of both Charles and Eric Rousseau's leadership of their historic estate. What is the allure of Rousseau Burgundies? One searches for words, but harmony, class, complexity and what one can only call layers of scents and flavours all come into play.

 

Then there is DRC, in all its beauty and finery, Dujac, Roumier (always in such short supply), de Vogüé, Faiveley, Dugat-Py, Hudelot-Noëllat, the heavenly Volnays of d'Angerville - and I am only 'scratching at the surface' in this astonishing sale. The line-up is just as splendid for white Burgundy, in both Chablis and the Côte de Beaune, with a tantalizing array of wines from both Domaine and Maison Henri Boillot.

 

Not to be outdone, First and Second Growth Bordeaux is very much present - do not miss the wondrous Haut Brion 1982, maybe at its glorious apogee now - but maybe not, when in Jeroboam or Imperial.

 

And then there is a rare run of Vega Sicilia Unico vintages, going back to the Sixties. They have a mystery all of their own and have to be tasted/drunk to be believed - complexity in the glass. And Giacomo Conterno Barolos are there to fascinate as well.

 

This wine-loving collector pursues the most majestic Champagnes with great persistence and the selection available here is enough to give one real thirst. The Cristal is awe-inspiring (try comparing the 2009 with the 2008, two very different vintages), while the Cristal Rosé makes an important, but rare, appearance. Dom Pérignon dazzles in all its forms, while the possibility of comparing the Blanc de Blanc styles of Krug Clos du Mesnil with Salon Le Mesnil and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne is irresistible, or it would be for me if I were permitted to bid!

Provenance and Storage

 

The conditions of these wines are truly impeccable, a result of professional wine storage and careful sourcing. This collector is a thoughtful and discerning wine lover who has amassed one of the most outstanding wine collections in the world. Having sold Parts I-III last year, we are now pleased to offer Part IV of this immense collection, still representing a small fraction of the whole. Most wines in this collection were bought on release via direct allocation from respected importers and retailers. All wines were stored at Octavian prior to coming to us for auction.

#1. 왜 로마네 콩티(DRC)는 비싼가.

높은 품질, 평판, 독점성, 그리고 수요와 공급의 조합으로 컬트적인 명성을 누리고 있다. 포도원(비니야드) 면적이 1.8헥타르로 DRC의 생산은 5,000병에 불과하다. 1병당 평균 2만6천달러. 

 

#2. DRC 도메인에 속하는 와인

도메인 로마네 콩티의 첫 빈티지는 1232년에 출시됐다. 현재의 라 로마네 콩티, 라 로마네-생 비방인 르 클루 드 생 비방 포도원에서 생산됐으며, 당시엔 분류 시스템이 도입되지 않아 그랑 크뤼 등급을 받지 못했다.

#3. DRC 포도원이 특별한 이유.

코트도르(Côte d'Or)의 구불구불한 언덕에 자리해 주변보다 약간 더 높다. 언덕은 태양에 노출을 보장한다. 토양은 배수가 잘되고 점토질이 적지만 석회암이 많다. 완벽한 숙성 조건을 갖추고 있다. 포도원 코트드본(Côte de Beaune)과 코트드뉘(Côte de Nuits)를 포함하는 부르고뉴 클리마(Climats)는 2015년 7월 세계문화유산으로 등재됐다.

화이트 와인(샤도네이) 르 몽라셰(Le Montrachet)를 생산한다. 포도원은 약 0.68헥타르의 작은 포도원이다.

#8 DRC는 얼마나 오래 보관할 수 있나. 

숙성을 통해 복합적인 향이 발달하고 산미가 더욱 좋아지기 때문에 15-20년 후 마시는 것이 좋다. 일부 퀴베는 40년 후에도 환상적이다. 

 

#9. 와이너리는 소유주는.

1869년 이래 DRC는 단 두 가문의 소유였다. 1869년, 79세의 자크-마리 뒤볼트(Jacques-Marie Duvault)가 인수했으며, 그가 사망한 후 딸 가브리엘 샹봉(Gabrielle Chambon), 이후 이모 앙리에트 뒤퓌(Henriette Dupuis), 이후 여동생과 조카에게 물려주었으며, 자크 샹봉(Jacques Chambon)과 동생 마리-도미니크 고댕 드 빌레인(Marie-Dominique Gaudin de Villaine)이 소유했다. 현재까지 고댕 드 빌레인 가문이 절반을 소유하고 있다. 

 

1942년 자크 샹봉이 앙리 르로이(Henri Leroy)에게 매각했고, 르로이는 딸 폴랭 로크(Pauline Roch)와 마르셀 비제-를로이(Marcelle Bize-Leroy)에게 물려주었다. 이후부터 DRC는 두 가문이 소유하게 된다. 1953년부터 오베르 드 빌레인(Aubert de Villaine)과 비제-를로이의 딸 페린느 페날(Perrine Fenal)이 소유했으며, 1992년부터 앙리 프레데릭 로크(Henri-Frédéric Roch)가 운영해왔다.
