The 100 Best Books of the 21st Century

뉴욕타임스가 '21세기 최우수 도서 100(The 100 Best Books of the 21st Century)'을 선정 발표했다. 이 목록에서 이민진(Min Jin Lee)씨의 소설 '파친코(Pachinko, 2017)'이 15위, 한강(Han Kang)씨의 소설 '채식주의자(The Vegetarian, 2016)'가 49위에 뽑혔다.  

21세기의 첫 25주년을 기념해서 기획된 '21세기 최우수 도서 100' 투표에는 소설가 스티븐 킹, 존 어빙, 이민진씨를 비롯, 넌픽션 작가, 시인, 비평가 및 배우 사라 제시카 파커, 피아니스트 제레미 덴크 등 503명이 참가했다. NYT는 이들에게 2000년 1월 1일 이후 출간된 도서 중 이 시대의 가장 중요하고, 영향력있는 책 10권을 설문조사했다.     

뉴욕타임스는 15위 '파친코'에 대해 "역사는 우리를 저버렸지만 그래도 상관없다"로 시작되는 '파친코'는 4대에 걸쳐 전쟁, 식민지화, 개인 갈등을 겪는 한인 가족의 풍요롭고 파란만장한 연대기로 교활한 마피아(야쿠자), 장애인 어부, 금지된 사람과 은밀한 상실이 있다. 그리고, 물론 등장인물들에게 금전적 생명선인 핀볼같은 게임 파칭코도 있다. 우리 모두와 마찬가지로 노름꾼들에게도 승리가 보장되지는 않을지언정"이라고 해설했다. 

'채식주의자'(49위)에 대해서는 "평범한 어느날 서울의 젊은 주부가 불길한 꿈에서 깨어나 고기를 그만 먹기로 결심한다. 그녀의 작은 반란이 소용돌이치면서 한강의 야위고 열정적인 소설은 신체가 원하는 것뿐만 아니라 영혼이 요구하는 것에 대한 초현실적인 명상이 된다"고 줄거리를 소개했다. 그리고, '멕시칸 고딕(Mexican Gothic)'의 저자 실비아 모레노-가르시아(Silvia Moreno-Garcia)는 "신비롭고, 초자연적인 분위기를 풍기는 짧은 소설로 그것은 마치 유령이 나오는 듯한, 억압적인 느낌을 준다 굶주림과 기아, 욕망에 이 어떻게 얽히는지를 보여주는 이야기"라고 평했다. 

1위는 이탈리아의 은둔 작가 엘레나 페란테(Elena Ferrante)의 나폴리 4부작 중 1권 '나의 눈부신 친구(My Brilliant Friend , 한길사 한국어 번역판 출간)가 선정됐다. 나폴리의 꼬방 동네에서 자란 릴라와 레누라의 유년기부터 노년기까지의 우정을 그린 소설이다. 뉴욕타임스는 "부지런하고, 책임감이 강한 레누와 카리스마있고 박력있는 릴라의 우정, 질투, 동경을 그린 작품으로 뉴욕타임스는 "마치 자갈길에서 자전거를 타는 것 같은 소설, 거칠고 미끄러운 동시에 긴장감을 준다"고 평했다.
