NYT Readers' Choice: The 100 Best Books of the 21st Century

뉴욕타임스가 선정한 '21세기 최우수 도서 100(The 100 Best Books of the 21st Century)'에 이어 독자들의 투표로 'The Reader Top 100'을 발표했다. 스티븐 킹, 이민진 등 작가, 비평가, 예술가 503인이 참가한 NYT 도서 리뷰의 톱 10이 작품성을 높이 평가했다면, 아마도 독자들의 베스트 도서는 그들이 사랑한 책, 대중성있는 인기 도서일 것이다. 아카데미상(작품성)과 피플즈 초이스상(상업성)의 차이라고나 할까. 

 

독자들이 선정한 톱 100에는 NYT 톱 100 중 39권만이 겹쳤다. NYT 도서 비평 톱 100에서 15위에 선정된 이민진씨의 '파친코(Pachinko)'는 독자 투표에선 5위에 올랐다. 이로써 '파친코'는 작품성과 대중성의 두마리 토끼를 잡은 픽션으로 공인된 셈이다. 한국계 뮤지션 미셸 자우너(Michelle Zainer)의 회고록 'H마트에서 울다(Crying in H Mart, 정혜윤 역, 문학동네 출간)'는 72위에 올랐다.

 

독자 선정 톱 1위는 바바라 킹솔버(Barbara Kingsolver)의 소설 '내 이름은 데몬 코퍼헤드(Demon Copperhead, 2022, 강동혁 번역, 은행나무 출간)가 차지했다. 이 소설은 찰스 디킨스(Charles Dickens)의 자전적 소설 '데이비드 코퍼필드(David Copperfield, 1849)'를 재구성한 작품으로 2023 퓰리처상 수상작이다. NYT 리스트에서는 61위에 올랐다. 한편, NYT의 도서 비평 1위였던 엘레나 파렌테의 소설 '나의 눈부신 친구(My Brilliant Friend)'는 독자 투표에선 8위를 기록했다.  

 

그리고, 무라카미 하루키(Haruki Murakami)의 소설 '해변의 카프카(Kafka on the Shore)'와 '1Q84'는 78, 79위를 기록했다. 그리고, 한국에서 베스트셀러가 된 이스라엘 작가 유발 하라리(Yubal Harari)의 '사피엔스(Sapiens)'는 77위, 제니퍼 로렌스 주연 영화의 원작소설인 수잔 콜린스(Susan Collins)의 '헝거게임(Hunger Game)'은 56위,  마틴 스콜세지 감독, 레오나르도 디카프리오 주연 영화로 유명해진 데이빗 그랜의 '플라워문(Killers of the Flower Moon)'는 69위, 가수 패티 스미스(Patti Smith)가 사진작가였던 연인 로버트 메이플소프(Robert Mapplethorpe)와의 관계를 담은 회고록 'Just Kids'는 66위에 랭크됐다. 

 

그런가하면, NYT 도서 리뷰에서 23위에 오른 2013 노벨상 수상작가 앨리스 먼로(Alice Munro), 37위에 오른 2022 노벨상 수상작가 아니 에르노(Annie Ernaux), 47위에 오른 1993 노벨상 수상작가 토니 모리슨(Toni Morrison)의 작품은 독자 투표에서 100위권 내에 들지 못했다.
