2020년 2월 9일 제 92회 아카데미상 시상식에서 '기생충(Parasite)'의 봉준호 감독이 감독상 트로피를 거머쥔 후 이렇게 말했다. 봉 감독과 함께 후보에 오른 감독은 마틴 스콜세지(아이리쉬맨), 퀜틴 타란티노(원스 어폰어 타임 인 할리우드), 샘 멘데스(1917), 그리고 토드 필립스(조커)였다.  

 

봉준호 감독은 토비 후퍼(Tobe Hooper, 1943-2017) 감독의 호러영화 '텍사스 전기톱 연쇄살인 사건(The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, 1974)'을 빗대어 수상 소감을 말한 것이다. '기생충'은 그날 작품상, 각본상, 그리고 국제극영화상까지 4개 부문을 석권했다. 오스카 시상식에 앞선 2019년 9월 텍사스주 오스틴의 극장 체인 알라모 드래프트 하우스에 '봉준호 시네마(Bong Joon Ho Cinema)'로 이름을 붙였다.  

 

뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA)이 '텍사스 전기톱 연쇄 살인사건' 50주년을 맞아 8월 8일부터 14일까지 토비 후퍼 감독의 1980년대 영화를 모은 'Tobe Hooper in the 1980s: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre at 50"를 연다.

이 영화제에선 최근 복원된 '펀하우스(Funhouse, 1981), 스티븐 스필버그가 각본을 쓰고 제작했으며, 한국에서도 화제가 되었던 공포영화 '폴터가이스트(Poltergeist, 1982)', SF영화 '화성 침입자들(Invaders from Mars, 1986)', 우주 뱀파이어 영화 '라이프포스(Lifeforce, 1985)', '텍사스 전기톱 연쇄살인 사건 2(The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, 1986)'가 상영된다. 

 

감독 토비 후퍼와 시나리오 작가 킴 헨켈(Kim Henkel)의 저예산 독립영화 '텍사스 전기톱 연쇄살인 사건'은 햇살이 내리쬐고 모호하게 불길한 중심부를 여행하는 것으로 시작, 빠르게, 충격적으로 식인종 기업가 집단에 납치되는 이야기다. 이 영화의 악몽같은 비전과 미국적 가치에 대한 끔찍한 풍자는 여러 세대의 팬을 얻었으며, 장르영화 역사상 가장 큰 영향을 미친 작품 중 한편으로 남았다. 영화제에서 킴 헨켈, 촬영감독 대니얼 펄(Daniel Pearl), 배우 테리 맥민(Teri McMinn), 프로덕션 매니저 론 보즈먼(Ron Bozman)이 토론회를 열 예정이다. 

 

텍사스주 오스틴 출신 토비 후퍼 감독은 9살 때 극장을 소유했던 아버지의 8mm 카메라로 영화를 만들기 시작했다. 1966년 8월 텍사스대 오스틴 캠퍼스 재학 중 찰스 휘트먼이 학교 시계탑 에서 무작위로 총기난사할 때 현장에 있었던 것으로 알려졌다. 후퍼는 70-80년대 호러 장르로 인디영화의 아이콘이 되었지만, 1990-2000년대에 연출한 작품들은 비평과 흥행에서 실패했다.  

 

리들리 스콧(Ridley Scott) 감독은 자신의 영화 '에일리언(Alien)'이 다른 어느 장르영화보다 '텍사스 전기톱 연쇄살인 사건'로부터 영향을 받았다고 밝혔다. 영국영화협회(British Film Institute)는 토비 후퍼를 역사상 가장 영향력있는 공포영화 감독 중 한명이라고 평가했다. 후퍼의 영향을 받은 감독으로는 웨즈 크레이븐(Wes Craven), 기요시 구로사와(Kiyoshi Kurosawa), 히데오 나카타(Hideo Nakata), 로브 좀비(Rob Zombie), 알렉산더 에이자(Alexandre Aja), 잭 토마스 스미스(Jack Thomas Smith), 니콜라스 윈딩 레픈(Nicolas Winding Refn) 등이 있다.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, MoMA presents the recently restored film in a special weeklong run. Director Tobe Hooper and screenwriter Kim Henkel’s modestly budgeted independent feature opens on a road trip through a sunny, vaguely sinister heartland—and quickly, jarringly descends into a tale of abduction by a cult of cannibalistic entrepreneurs. The film’s nightmarish vision and gruesome satire of American values has earned it generations of fans, and it remains among the most profoundly influential works in genre film history.

 

This weeklong presentation begins on August 8, when Kim Henkel, cinematographer Daniel Pearl, actress Teri McMinn, and production manager Ron Bozman will join us live to discuss the film’s legacy.

 

Presented in conjunction with our run of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, this series highlights director Tobe Hooper’s celebrated and controversial genre films of 

the 1980s: The Funhouse, Poltergeist, Invaders from Mars, Lifeforce, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.

 

Presented in conjunction with our weeklong run of Tobe Hooper’s legendary The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), this series highlights the late director’s celebrated and controversial genre films of the 1980s: The Funhouse (1981), Poltergeist (1982), Invaders from Mars (1986), Lifeforce (1985), and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986). After starting the decade with the classical slasher The Funhouse (which earned him a chapter in Quentin Tarantino’s book Cinema Speculation) and a high-profile collaboration with Steven Spielberg on Poltergeist, Hooper turned to science fiction with a B-film-inspired remake of Invaders from Mars, followed by the bizarre, ill-fated space-vampire epic Lifeforce. Hooper closed out his ’80s run with the delirious sequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, which is considered by some superior to the original. Although he continued to challenge taboos—and decorum—on screen in the ’90s and into the 2000s, promising Hooper horror titles like Spontaneous Combustion, The Mangler, Night Terrors, and Toolbox Murders failed to impress critics or attract audiences.
