아담스 시장 민주당 전당대회 연사 제외된 이유는?

공화당 출신 에릭 아담스 뉴욕시장 지지율 역대 최저

파티처럼 흥미진진한 TV쇼가 된 시카고의 민주당 전당대회(8/19-22)에 연사로 초대받지 못한 인물이 있다. 바로 에릭 아담스(Eric Adams) 뉴욕 시장. 

캐시 호컬 뉴욕주지사를 비롯, LA의 캐런 베이스, 시카고의 브랜든 존슨 등 다른 대도시의 시장들, 뉴욕주 의원들과 스파이크 리 감독이 무대에 올랐다. 2016년 빌 드 블라지오 전 뉴욕시장은 필라델피아에서 열린 전당 대회에서 연설했다. 

아담스는 왜 전당대회에 초빙되지 못했을까? 뉴욕타임스는 아담스의 국가적 인지도가 떨어졌기 때문이라고 분석했다. 아담스의 도서관 예산 삭감, 무료 유치원 정책은 환영받지 못했다는 것. 또한, 아담스의 오만함도 지적됐다. 지난해 12월 현재 아담스의 지지율은 28%로 역대 최저를 기록했다. 

아담스는 2021년 뉴욕시장에 선출됐을 때 스스로 '브루클린의 바이든(Biden of Brooklyn)'이라 불렀다. 아담스는 한때 공화당원이었으며, 도날드 트럼프를 강력하게 비판하지 않았다. 아담스는 21일 "난 주목을 끌 필요가 없다. 무대에 설 필요가 없다. 나는 뉴욕 시장이며, 내 삶이 무대"라고 말했다고 뉴욕타임스는 전했다.
