저지시티 '퐁피두센터 × 뉴저지' 프로젝트 중단

서울 63타워점 2025 개관, '부산 분관' 문화계 반발

 

 

파리의 현대미술관 퐁피두센터(Centre Pompidou)가 글로벌 뮤지엄으로 박차를 가하면서 저지시티, 서울과 부산까지 분관을 열 계획이 좌초에 부딪혔다. 

 

퐁피두센터는 2010년 프랑스 로랑의 메츠에 분관을 오픈한 후 2015년 스페인 말라가(피카소 고향), 2018년 브뤼셀, 2019년 상하이에 지점을 열었다. 2025년부터 2억8천만 달러를 들여 대대적인 보수공사에 들어가는 퐁피두는 오는 2030년 재개관할 예정이다. 이에 따라 소장품을 세계 분관으로 대여해주며 로열티를 받아 수익을 올리려는 계획으로 보인다. 

 

퐁피두는 프랑스 메츠, 상하이, 스페인 말라가, 브뤼셀, 콜롬비아 보고타에 이어 사우디 아라비아, 뉴저지의 저지 시티, 서울, 부산까지 지점을 확장을 모색해왔다.

 

2023년 3월 퐁피두는 한화문화재단과 계약을 맺고 2025년 서울 63타워에 지부를 연다고 발표했으며, 프랑스 건축가 장 미셸 빌모트가 설계자로 선정됐다. 한화그룹은 4년간 협업 기간동안 퐁피두의 컬렉션을 바탕으로 연간 2회씩 8회 전시를 열며 브랜드를 사용할 권한을 얻는 조건으로 임대료로 로열티를 내야한다. 르몽드지에 따르면, 한화는 2천만 유로를 지불하는 것으로 예측됐다. 

 

여기에 최근 부산에까지 풍피두 분관을 부산에 유치하려는 계획이 시민단체와 문화계의 반발을 사고 있다. 이들은 "지역 미술계, 시민사회단체와 어떤 의견 수렴도 없이 추진되는 퐁피두센터 분관 부산 유치는 철회돼야 한다"고 주장했다. 부산시는 졸속으로 양해각서(MOU)를 체결하고 내용을 비공개로 한 것에 대해 비판하며, 계약 절차 중단을 요구했다. 퐁피두센터를 부산에 유치하려면 건축비 1천100억원에 운영비가 연간 120억원이 들 것으로 추산되고 있다. 

 

부산 박형준 시장의 부인은 조현화랑의 설립자 조현씨다. 조현화랑은 1989년 부산 광안리에 갤러리 월드로 문을 연 후 2007년 서울 청담동에 지점을 열었다가 2015년 철수했다. 그러나 올 봄 서울 신라호텔 지하 1층에 다시 서울점을 열었다. 조현화랑은 지난해 5월 뉴욕에 진출, 록펠러센터에 이배 작가의 숯조각 'Issu du feu'를 전시했으며, 박서보, 윤종숙, 입양 작가 진 마이어슨 3인전을 열었다.

한편, 2027년 개관예정이었던 뉴저지주 저지시티(시장 스티븐 풀롭 Steven Fulop)의 퐁피두센터 × 뉴저지(Centre Pompidou x Jersey City) 프로젝트로 무기한 연기됐다. 뉴저지 개발청(New Jersey’s Economic Development Authority, NJEDA)은 올 7월 퐁피두 관장에게 뉴저지주에서 수천만 달러의 비용을 지불할 수 없을 것이라고 통보했다. 

 

아트 뉴스페이퍼에 따르면, 뉴저지주 의원들은 2024년 예산에서 이 프로젝트에 2천4백만 달러, 2020년 예산에서 1천8백만 달러를 배정했으며, 주의회가 재정지원을 철회한 후 일반 기금으로 재분배되어 6백만 달러가 지급된 것으로 알려졌다. 2021년 첫 발표된 퐁피두센터x저지 시티 프로젝트는 2018년 시가 9백만 달러에 매입한 저널 스퀘어의 4층 건물에 2024년 퐁피두 분관을 오픈할 계획이었다. 

 

그러나, 이 프로젝트는 뉴저지 공화당원들로부터 "낭비와 과잉의 서커스(a circus of waste and excess)"라는 비판을 받았다. 퐁피두 웹사이트엔 저지시티 분관 프로젝트가 올라와 있다. 

 

1977년 렌조 피아노(휘트니 다운타운)과 리처드 로저스의 'Inside-Out' 설계로 개관한 퐁퓌두센터는 2023년말부터 4년간 보수공사에 들어간다. 프랑스 총리 조르쥬 퐁퓌두(1911-1974) 이름을 땄으며, 약 12만여점을 소장하고 있다.

Centre Pompidou Hanwha-Séoul

Scheduled to open in autumn 2025

 

On 27 July 2023, the Centre Pompidou signed a partnership agreement to create a Centre Pompidou in Hanwha-Seoul, in South Korea. This exhibition area will be located in Tower 63, a building of over 11,000 sq.m, located in Yeouido, in the finance district of the cit. Jean-Michel Wilmotte  is in charge of remodelling the interior of this establishment set to open in autumn 2025.

 

For this novel collaboration, the Centre Pompidou will be putting on a series of eight monographic and themed exhibitions (at a rate of two a year for four years), from the Musée National d’Art Moderne’s modern and contemporary collections. Nearly 1,500 sq.m have been allocated exclusively to these exhibitions on the following artists and movements: Marc Chagall, Cubism, Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miró, Henri Matisse, Braque-Picasso, Surrealism and Jean Dubufet. In addition to this rich schedule, the Centre Pompidou Hanwha-Seoul also aims to set up an educational area in the same building for young visitors to explore and interact with the works of art. 

 

This partnership shall run for four years, starting on the opening date of the Centre Pompidou Hanwha-Seoul. 

 

 

Centre Pompidou × New Jersey

Scheduled to open in 2027

 

Gearing up for the opening of the building in 2027, the Centre Pompidou x New Jersey will be exhibiting a series of programmes in 2025 and 2026 to lay the foundations for this future "US-style" Centre Pompidou. This new institution will be drawing on half a century of multi-disciplinary success in Paris to strike up a conversation with North American intellectual and cultural perspectives.

 

In keeping with the building in Jersey City boasting a forum open to all, exhibition rooms, a dance studio, several amateur workshops and an entire floor earmared for educational activities, these prefiguation programmes will especially focus on education and a multiplicity of forms. Thus, the Centre Pompidou × New Jersey is collaborating anew with its neighbour, the Hudson County Community College (partner to the Night of Ideas 2024) to design an interactive programme on the future of museums. It will also present an event on the entire city inspired by the work of Alice Guy-Blaché, pioneer French director and producer of film in Nw Jersey in the early 20th century. Lastly, the Centre Pompidou x New Jersey will be paying special attention to the local scenes with a diverse set of collaborations, and boosting educational initiatives in schools and libraries in the city to gain a strong foothold in the region.
