The screening series The Magic of Oz: A Frank Oz Retrospective will be comprised of all 15 films for which Frank Oz served as director, including two collaborations with friend and mentor Jim Henson and four with fellow funnyman Steve Martin; films in which he stole scenes as a performer, such as The Empire Strikes Back and Inside Out; and programs celebrating his character creations for Sesame Street and The Muppet Show.
Major highlights of the series are the programs featuring special appearances by Frank Oz. They include two special events featuring Oz in conversation with friends and creative partners: on Saturday, October 19, at 1:00 p.m. an hour-long conversation with Oz and Pete Docter, director of Inside Out (followed by a screening of Inside Out at 2:30); and on November 9, a screening of the beloved 1988 comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels followed by a conversation between Oz and the film’s star Steve Martin. The weekend of November 9–10 will be dedicated to their collaborations. In addition, Oz will appear in person with screenings of the rarely screened director’s cut of Little Shop of Horrors (Oct. 4) and both The Muppets Take Manhattan and his rarely screened documentary Muppet Guys Talking (Oct. 6).
Museum of the Moving Image is home to The Jim Henson Exhibition and the monthly series Jim Henson’s World, programmed by Craig Shemin, President of The Jim Henson Legacy. As part of this series, the Museum will present two special programs that focus on Frank Oz’s partnership with Henson: A Spotlight on Miss Piggy, a compilation tracing the evolution of Miss Piggy, performed by Frank Oz (Oct. 5 & 6), and The Best of Frank Oz, which features some of Oz's favorite Henson moments—ranging from his first collaboration with Jim, as Rowlf's right hand on The Jimmy Dean Show, to his own major characters on Muppet television shows, feature films, and guest appearances (Nov. 16 & 17).
“Frank Oz has been a revered and adored artist for generations, yet I’d argue he’s underappreciated for his filmmaking, which he’s dedicated the past 40 years to,” says Curator of Film Eric Hynes. “From the beginning he defied expectations, starting with his now-classic homage to the Hollywood studio musical and B-movie creature feature, Little Shop of Horrors, and continuing through slyly subversive comedies like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, What About Bob?, In & Out, and Bowfinger, before tackling a satire, a YA literary adaptation, a crime drama, a Ealing-style English farce, and documentaries. Oz’s singular intelligence, wit, and creativity have illuminated them all. We’re grateful he’s letting us shine a spotlight on him.”

In 1961, Jim Henson, searching for a new puppeteer to join the Muppets, met Frank Oznowicz at a Puppeteers of America Festival in Asilomar, California.
