MoMA 특별전 & 로드무비 '캔디마운틴' 개봉
뉴욕 사진작가 로버트 프랭크(Robert Frank, 1924-2019)의 탄생 100주년을 맞아 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA)에선 개인전 'Life Dances On: Robert Frank in Dialogue'(9/15, 2024-1/11, 2025)가 열린다. 또한, 프랭크가 루디 울리처(Rudy Wurlitzer)와 공동으로 연출한 음악 로드무비 '캔디마운틴(Candy Mountain, 1987)'이 10월 25일 개봉된다. 이 영화는 1980년대 뉴욕에서 성공을 꿈꾸는 뮤지션의 여정을 담은 '캔디 마운틴'엔 톰 웨이츠, 닥터 존 등 전설적인 뮤지션들이 출연한다.

The Museum of Modern Art announces Life Dances On: Robert Frank in Dialogue, an exhibition that will provide new insights into the interdisciplinary and lesser-known aspects of photographer and filmmaker Robert Frank’s expansive career. The exhibition will delve into the six decades that followed Frank’s landmark photobook The Americans (1958) until his death in 2019, highlighting his perpetual experimentation and collaborations across various mediums. Coinciding with the centennial of his birth and taking its name from the artist’s 1980 film, Life Dances On will explore Frank’s artistic and personal dialogues with other artists and with his communities. The exhibition will feature more than 200 objects, including photographs, films, books, and archival materials, drawn from MoMA’s extensive collection alongside significant loans.
In conjunction with Life Dances On, MoMA also presents Robert Frank’s Scrapbook Footage from September 15, 2024, through March 2025, and The Complete Robert Frank: Films and Videos, 1959–2017 from November 20 through December 11, 2024.

SYNOPSIS
New York City, 1980s. A struggling, deadbeat musician named Julius (Kevin J. O’Connor) has fallen on hard times. With no guitar, band or paying gigs, he cooks up a get-rich-quick scheme – to find the legendary, yet elusive guitar-maker Elmore Silk (Harris Yulin). Considered one of the greatest luthiers in the business, Silk’s disappearance from the scene has only made his work more coveted by musicians and executives looking to make a buck off his name. Julius agrees to track the man down and sets out on the road. Meant to be a simple journey upstate, the erstwhile rocker stumbles down a long, winding road full of dead-ends and wrong turns towards an eventual revelatory conclusion in the Canadian wilderness. One of the great cult classics of the 1980s and starring character actors Kevin J O’Conner and Harris Yulin, as well as the legendary actress Bulle Ogier, the supporting cast features real-life music legends Tom Waits, Leon Redbone, Joe Strummer, Dr. John, David Johansen and Arto Lindsay. “A wry, laid-back Heart of Darkness" (Chicago Reader), CANDY MOUNTAIN combines the keen eye of the legendary Frank with novelist/screenwriter Wurlitzer’s mythic American prose to produce the quintessential road movie.
Called “Frank’s ultimate work” by J. Hoberman of The Village Voice, top critics feted the now cult classic with Desson Thomas of The Washington Post saying, "The big surprise in Candy Mountain is how much fun it is. Co-directors Robert Frank and Rudy Wurlitzer take the dated road movie off its bricks, gussy it up and keep it chugging along. And you get sweeter on ‘Candy’ with every passing mile" and Caryn James of The New York Times wrote, “'Candy Mountain... seems to be a small, quirky film, but it easily assumes the weight, ambition and success that many larger films aim for and miss."
This year the art world will also be celebrating Frank, the Swiss-born photographer and filmmaker who broke new ground with his candid, poignant images of American life in the mid-20th century. Among the events and exhibitions to be held, celebrating his radical approach to image making that forever changed the course of photography and film are “Life Dances On: Robert Frank in Dialogue,” the first-ever solo exhibition of his work to be presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York which will begin in September 2024.

사진작가 로버트 프랭크(Robert Frank, 94)의 삶을 담은 다큐멘터리 '집 떠나기, 집으로 돌아오기(Leaving Home, Coming Home: A Portrait of Robert Frank, 出家歸家)'가 암실 속에 15년간 갖혀있다가 세상 밖으로 나왔다. 영국의 제럴드 폭스(Gerald Fox) 감독이 만든 이 영화는 로버트 프랭크 자신이 널리 상영되는 것을 원치 않았다. 1년에 3개 영화제에서 상영으로 제한했다. 왜 그랬을까?
로버트 프랭크는 1958년 방방곡곡을 돌며 인종차별과 빈부격차 속에서 살아가는 미국인들의 어두운 초상을 담은 사진집 '미국인들(The Americans)'을 출간했다. 하지만, 2004년 80세의 로버트 프랭크 자신은 카메라 앞에 서는 것을 달가와하지 않았다. 그는 어디까지나 카메라 뒤에 머물러야하는 사진가이자 영화감독, 그리고 스위스 취리히 출신의 아웃사이더였다. 제럴드 폭스의 다큐멘터리는 스포트라이트를 기피하고 싶었던 전설적인 사진가 로버트 프랭크의 초상을 그려낸다. 스틸이 아니라 무빙 이미지로.

홀로코스트의 악몽에서 탈출한 프랭크는 사진작가로서의 명성과 화가 준 리프(June Leaf)와의 행복한 결혼생활 뒤에 묻어두고 싶었던 과거가 있었다. 딸과 아들의 때이른 죽음, 그에게는 평생 트라우마가 된다. 화가 메리 프랭크(Mary Frank)와의 첫 결혼에서 낳은 딸 안드레아(Andrea)는 1974년 스무살 때 과테말라 비행기 추락사고로 사망했다. 아들 파블로는 1994년 호지킨스 림프종에 걸린 아들 파블로는 정신병원을 오가다가 눈을 감았다. 두 자녀를 앞서 보낸 사진가의 깊은 슬픔이 묻어난다.
제럴드 폭스 감독은 이 다큐를 제작할 당시의 조사원과 결혼해 3자녀를 두었다. 이것이 로버트 프랭크에게 마음을 열게 하고, 영화 상영권을 풀어주는 훈훈한 인연이 되었을지도 모른다. 감독은 프랭크의 사진처럼, 과거의 노스탈쟈와 오늘(2004년 현재) 로버트 프랭크의 삶까지 희로애락을 흑백과 컬러로 변주한다.

영화는 2004년 이스트빌리지의 공터에서 시작된다. 건물이 철거되어 폐기물들이 널부러져 있는 공터의 철조망 안으로 프랭크는 카메라맨을 안내한다. 그는 뉴욕은 많이 변하고 있다. 여피들 옆에 살고 싶지 않다. 이사가려 한다고 말한다. 이것이 뉴욕 다운타운의 뒷모습이자, 로버트 프랭크의 마음 속으로 들어가는 입구 구실을 한다. 프랭크는 반복되는 촬영에 대해 성질을 부린다. "이것 못하겠어. 나는 배우가 아니야, 이건 헛소리라구... 코니 아일랜드로 가는 편이 낫겠어."
그리고, 연로한 사진작가 로버트 프랭크는 50여년만에 코니 아일랜드로 가서 자신이 찍은 사진 속 건물을 알아볼 주민을 찾는다. "사진으로 말해야지 내가 말할 필요가 없다. 머리가 있고, 사람들에 대한 감정이 있다면, 좋은 사진가가 될 수 있다." 침묵하고 싶었던 로버트 프랭크의 조언이다.

스위스에서 나치즘을 피해 뉴욕으로 이주한 사진작가가 상업사진(하퍼스 바자/Harper’s Bazaar의 패션 사진가)을 버리고, 삶의 진실을 담기위해 중고차에 가족과 몸을 싣고 2년간 미국 곳곳을 다니며 포착한 미국인들은 TV가 보여주는 화려한 미국의 모습과 정반대의 황폐하고, 절망스러운 사진들이었다.

이 사진 작업을 하면서 로버트 프랭크는 인종차별을 생생히 목격했다. 미씨시피 도로에서 흑인을 태워주었다는 이유로 경찰의 심문을 당했다. 그 이유로 더욱 흑인들에 렌즈를 댔다. 그는 "뚱뚱한 백인들에 비교할 때 얼마나 우아한가"라고 말한다. 아메리칸 드림이 아니라 아메리칸 악몽인 것. 프랭크는 그늘에서 진실을 담아냈다. 그가 촬영한 2만8천여컷 중 흑백인이 격리된 기차, 백인 아기를 안은 흑인 내니, 구겨진 성조기 등 83컷만이 사진집 '미국인들'에 담겼다.

영화는 60년대 비트 세대를 이끈 소설가 잭 케루악(Jack Kerouac), 시인 알렌 긴스버그(Allen Ginsberg), 소설가 윌리엄 보로스(William Burroughs), 사진가 워커 에반스(Walker Evans), 에드워드 스타이첸(Edward Steichen)에 영국 록밴드 롤링스톤스(The Rolling Stones)의 다큐멘터리 '콕석커 블루스(Cocksucker Blues)'를 연출하던 에피소드도 담았다. 리더 믹 재거가 기타리스트 키스 리처드에 더 잘 나왔다는 이유로 배급을 방해했다. 그리고, 한해에 3군데 이상에서 상영하는 것을 금지시켰다. 영화감독으로서 이 치욕을 로버트 프랭크 자신이 20녀년 후 제럴트 폭스의 다큐멘터리에 적용한 것은 삶의 아이러니다. 프랭크에게 그 시대는 '낙관주의'와 '꿈'이 있던 시절...그러나, 지금 꿈은 없다.

화가 부인 준 리프는 "로버트는 젓가락을 쥔 사람같다. 관찰하고, 관찰한 후 젓가락을 쥐고, 혼란 속에서 가장 지속적이면서 핵심이 되는 것을 집어낸다."고 말한다. 이 예술가 부부는 서로에게 자극이 되면서도 때때로 서로에게 비명을 지르며 소통한다.
영화는 시작했던 공터로 돌아간다. 그는 셀폰에 매달려 있는 뉴요커들을 개탄하다가 딜란시 스트릿를 걸으며(Crossing Delancey) 자신이 생존자(survivor)라며 카메라 앞 삶 이야기를 마무리한다. 버스에는 록스타 프린스(Prince, 1958-2016)의 매디슨스퀘어가든 콘서트 광고가 붙어있었다. 인생무상(人生無常)이다.

다큐멘터리 '집 떠나기, 집으로 돌아오기'는 예술가로서 로버트 프랭크의 떠남과 돌아옴의 부메랑같은 삶을 담담하게 그려낸다. 취리히에서 뉴욕으로, 미국의 변방으로, 페루로, 유럽으로 돌다가 다시 뉴욕의 버스 속에서, 그리고 캐나다 노바 스코시아의 또 다른 집으로. 늘 아웃사이더로서의 날카로움을 유지할 수 있는 비결일까? 카메라를 놓고 카메라 앞에 선 노장의 사진가의 모습에서 인생의 아이러니를 느끼게 한다.
이 다큐는 헬렌 프랑켄탈러 기금과 로이 리히텐스타인 재단 기금의 지원으로 상영된다. 감독과의 대화는 5월 29일, 31일 6월 1일 오후 7시 50분 상영회에 진행된다. 러닝타임 85분.
