올 베를린영화제 은곰상(심사위원대상) 수상작인 홍상수 감독의 '여행자의 필요(A Traveler’s Needs)'가 11월 22일 맨해튼 필름포럼(Film Forum 209 West Houston St.)에서 개봉된다.

 

프랑스 연기파 배우 이자벨 위페르(Isabelle Hyppert)가 서울 교외에서 불어를 가르치는 아이리스로 등장한다. 미스테리 방랑자 아이리스는 특유의 방법으로 불어를 가르치고, 막걸리를 즐겨 마신다. 위페르는 '다른 나라에서(In Another Country, 2012)'와 '클레어의 카메라(Clair's Camera, 2017)'에 이어 세번째 홍 감독과 호흡을 맞추었다. 홍감독이 제작, 시나리오, 연출, 촬영, 편집, 음악을 맡았으며, 배우 김민희가 제작부장으로 참가했다. 권해효, 이혜영, 조윤희, 하성국, 김승윤이 출연한다. 

 

홍상수 감독의 31번째 장편영화 '여행자의 필요'는 신작 '수유천(By the Stream)'과 함께 2024 뉴욕영화제(NYFF62, 9/27-10/14)에 초청됐다. 이로써 홍상수 감독은 62년 역사의 뉴욕영화제에 23편이 상영되는 기록을 세웠다.

 

베를린영화제 경쟁 부문에 7회 진출한 홍 감독은 이제까지 은곰상만 5회를 석권했다. 2008년 '밤과 낮(Night and Day)'으로 베를린영화제 경쟁 부문에 진출한 홍 감독은 2017년 '밤의 해변에서 혼자(On the Beach at Night Alone)'으로 은곰상 여우주연상(김민희), 2020년 '도망친 여자(The Woman Who Ran_'으로 은곰상 감독상, 2021년 '인트로덕션(Introduction)'으로 은곰상 각본상, 2022년엔 '소설가의 영화(The Novelist's Film)'으로 은곰상 심사위원대상, 그리고 올 2월 신작 '여행자의 필요'로 다시 은곰상 심사위원 대상을 수상했다.  https://filmforum.org

“My path is always a new path”: Isabelle Huppert plays Iris, an inscrutable, seemingly dropped-from-the-sky French teacher to two Korean women in A TRAVELER’S NEEDS. While Iris seems perfectly at ease as a stranger in Seoul — trying out her osmotic language technique (no textbooks), gamely questioning anyone she meets, and pursuing her craving for makgeolli (a milky rice wine) — she arouses curiosity and awkward confusion from her clients and the mother of her young male roommate. Is she a naif whose enigmatic allure illuminates the souls of those she encounters? Or is she a con artist?

 

The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize, and it was an official selection at the New York Film Festival. A TRAVELER’S NEEDS is Hong Sangsoo’s 31st feature, and third collaboration with Isabelle Huppert following CLAIRE’S CAMERA and IN ANOTHER COUNTRY (a Film Forum premiere).
