We’re excited to share the debut release from KYN, a transcontinental trio redefining vocal music through a seamless blend of cultures, genres, and personal journeys. Their album, out January 24th, is a bold exploration of harmony and creativity, weaving together classical, jazz, pop, and avant-garde influences into a truly global sound.

KYN features three extraordinary vocalists whose diverse paths converge to form something greater than the sum of their parts:

  • Yoon Sun Choi, a Korean-Canadian turned Brooklyn-based artist, evolved from classical piano to jazz vocals, blending precision with pop sensibilities and improvisational freedom.
  • Hanna Schörken, from Germany, brings an avant-garde edge with her focus on experimental improvisation, drawing on her literary studies and global travels.
  • Noa Fort, an Israeli-born, Brooklyn-based artist, combines her background in classical and jazz piano with emotional depth shaped by her work as a creative arts therapist and frequent collaborations with artists like William Parker and Mat Maneri.

Though separated by oceans, KYN’s rare reunions spark a creative synergy that transcends geographical boundaries. Their album reflects this vibrant fusion, drawing on their cultural backgrounds—Korean, German, Israeli, Canadian, and American—to create a sound that resonates with modern interconnectedness.

KYN is a meeting of three distinct female voices from different parts of the world, with different musical identities, coming together in exploratory, uninhibited, creative sound-making.

KYN’s live performance at the Main Drag (Brooklyn) was voted in the 2023 best improvised music performances by the Musical Path contemporary music magazine

KYN’s album review from Salt Peanuts, a pan-Nordic web-based journal on strong improvised music, calls their debut album a “joyful and talkative meeting of opinionated and eccentric extraterrestrial pixies, that sounds beautiful and sensual, unpredictable and funny, and transcends familiar genre boundaries”.

Story

In the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary music, KYN emerges as a vibrant mosaic, weaving together the rich and diverse backgrounds of three extraordinary vocalists. This transcontinental trio—Yoon Sun Choi, Hanna Schörken, and Noa Fort—creates a sound as diverse as their origins, a testament to the power of cultural fusion and musical exploration.

KYN's story begins with a serendipitous encounter in Brooklyn, but its roots stretch across continents and musical genres. Yoon Sun Choi, a Korean-Canadian now American artist, brings a fascinating musical trajectory to the group. Originally a classical pianist, Yoon Sun's formative years were steeped in the vibrant sounds of pop and new wave. This eclectic foundation eventually led her to jazz vocals, where she found her true calling. Her journey from The Blue Note to Carnegie Hall is mirrored in her ability to seamlessly blend classical precision with jazz improvisation and pop sensibilities.

From Germany, Hanna Schörken adds another layer of complexity to KYN's sonic palette. With a primary focus on experimental improvisation, Hanna's jazz vocals push the boundaries of conventional singing. Her approach to music is deeply influenced by her studies in literature and her global travels, bringing a narrative richness and avant-garde edge to the trio's performances.

Completing the trio is Noa Fort, a NY based, Israeli born artist whose musical path echoes the group's diversity. Like Yoon Sun, Noa began as a classical pianist before expanding her repertoire to include jazz piano and vocals. Actively involved in the local music scene as a band leader and as a frequent collaborator (Fort regularly performs with William Parker, Mat Maneri, Chad Taylor, to name a few), her unique perspective as both a musician and a creative arts therapist infuses KYN's music with emotional depth and healing resonance.

What makes KYN truly special is not just the individual journeys of its members, but the alchemical reaction that occurs when their voices and experiences intertwine. Despite the oceans between them—with Hanna based in Germany and Yoon Sun and Noa in Brooklyn—their musical connection defies geographical boundaries. Each rare reunion ignites a creative explosion that belies their time apart, as if their voices carry the memory of shared experiences across time and space.

Their debut album is a sonic journey through this rich tapestry of influences. From the structural complexity of classical music to the improvisational freedom of jazz, from the catchy hooks of pop to the boundary-pushing experiments of avant-garde, KYN's music is a reflection of their vast and varied musical landscapes. The cultural backgrounds of each member—Korean, German, Israeli, Canadian, and American—add further depth, creating a truly global sound that resonates with the interconnectedness of our modern world.

As they release this exceptional album, KYN invites listeners to explore the beautiful complexity of their musical world. It's an opportunity to experience how diverse voices, each with its own unique journey, can come together to create something greater than the sum of its parts. In a time when the world often seems divided, KYN stands as a powerful reminder of the unifying force of music, proving that harmony can be found in the most unexpected combinations of voices, cultures, and musical traditions.
