This program is part of the Gilda and Henry Block School of the Arts.
Overview
The talk will be about Hun Chung Lee’s life journey which has led him to explore craft, fine art, and design, resulting in a diverse body of work that includes sculpture, art furniture, pottery, and installation.
His approach to ceramics involves a deep engagement with his materials and process, especially given the unpredictable nature of glazes. The true beauty of Lee’s practice lies in the balance he achieves in each piece and the conversations he fosters between different works.
“For me, a journey is to return. A journey is not wandering. It should have a place to which I am to return. I love to use the word “journey” to express my work and my life.”
Price:From $25.00
Lee, Hun Chung
Born in Seoul, Korea and based in both Seoul and LA, Hun Chung Lee (b.1967) earned his BFA and MFA in ceramic sculpture from Hongik University in Seoul, before moving to the United States to obtain a second MFA in sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute. He then pursued a PhD in architecture in Korea. The range of Lee’s education speaks to his diverging aesthetic and conceptual interests and his vision to merge the seemingly distinct disciplines of art, design, and architecture into a singular whole. Over the course of his career, he has created diminutive ceramic objects, a vast array of functional and collective design works, as well as large-scale, multi-part FINE ART works and installations. With each development within his oeuvre, Lee has maintained a relationship to Korean cultural heritage, and in particular the long creative history of Korean ceramics. This is especially manifest in his mastery of and ongoing experimentation with celadon glaze fired in a traditional, hand-built kiln.
