Behind Notre-Dame’s Monumental Restoration:

The 2025 Paul Mellon Lecture

The devastating fire at Notre-Dame de Paris on April 15, 2019 reminded the world of the significance of humanity’s built heritage and inspired a resolute commitment to rebuild. The extraordinary project that restored the beloved French landmark in just five years marks a triumph in preservation and a renewed commitment to safeguarding our shared cultural heritage.  

Following Notre-Dame's reopening in December 2024, get a behind-the-scenes look at the revival of this icon of French medieval architecture with World Monuments Fund’s annual Paul Mellon Lecture on March 12, taking place this year as part of the organization’s 60th anniversary program.  

Special guests will include Philippe Villeneuve, chief architect for historic monuments in France, including Notre-Dame de Paris; Barry Bergdoll, Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History and Archaeology professor of art history and archaeology at Columbia University; Bas Smets, landscape designer; and Patrick Malloy, dean at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, in conversation with WMF President and CEO Bénédicte de Montlaur.  

Co-presented with the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and the Columbia University Maison Française, this event will share insights from what has become the largest preservation project of the century and consider how sacred and historic sites around the world can learn from each other about preventing and rebuilding after a fire.

세인트 존더 디바인 대성당 St. John The Divine Cathedral 

컬럼비아대학교 인근에 자리한 세계 최대의 성당. 면적이 12만1000평방피트에 달한다. 

1888년 설계되어 1892년 공사에 착수했지만, 아직도 공사 중인 미완성의 성당, 때문에 별명은 "미완성의 성 요한(St. John the Unfinished)". 크리스토퍼 그랜트 라파지(Christopher Grant LaFarge)와 조지 루이스 하인스(George Lewis Heins)가 비잔틴 리바이벌-로마네스크 리바이벌로 설계했다가 1909년 랄프 아담스 크램(Ralph Adams Cram)이 뛰어 들어 고딕 리바이벌로 디자인을 바꾸었다. 2001년 12월 화재로 보수공사에 들어가 2008년 다시 오픈했으며, 현재까지 공사 및 복구공사가 진행형이다. 

‘만인을 위한 기도의 집(A House of Prayer for All People)’을 모토로 한 이 성당은 국적, 민족, 인종, 사회단체를 망라하고 모두 포용하고 있다. 안에는 ‘미국 시인의 코너’(월트 휘트만, 로버트 프루스트, 에밀리 디킨슨) ‘소방관(FDNY) 메모리얼’, 아시안을 위한 불교사원까지 갖추었다. 이 열린 성당에선 4월 ‘자전거 축복’ 행사, 10월엔 동물들을 축복하는 행사(Blessing of the Animals)를 열고 있다. 인기있는 이 행사에서 개와 고양이는 물론 코끼리, 얼룩말까지 여기서 축복을 받았다. 5월의 마지막 주 메모리얼데이엔 뉴욕필하모닉 특별 연주회가 무료로 열린다.
