이집트에서 투탕카멘 발굴 이후 103년만에 왕릉이 발견됐다. 이집트 관광유물부는 룩소르 인근에서 발견된 왕릉이 약 3천500년 전에 살았던 제18왕조의 파라오 투트모세 2세(Thutmose II)라고 밝혔다. 

투트모세 2세는 이집트의 여성 파라오였던 핫셉수트 남편으로 기원전 1493년부터 1479년까지 통치하다가 30세에 사망했다. 후계자인 투트모세 3세가 너무 어려서 하트셉수트가 공동 파라오가 되었다. 

이번 발견은 1922년 투탕카멘 왕릉 이후 첫 파라오의 무덤이다. 발굴은 영국 고고학자 피어스 리더랜드(Piers Litherland)가 이끄는 발굴팀으로 카이로뮤지엄에 소장되어 있는 데이르 엘-바하리 카셰테에서 발굴된 투트모세 2세의 미라는 가짜일 가능성이 크다고 주장했다. 발굴 작업은 23미터 아래로 유적지를 해체하는데, 약 1개월이 걸릴 것으로 알려졌다.
